Classic car and motorcycle meets are good for our health! Now, we’re not suggesting that attending a club event is a medical treatment, but what the NHS does recognise, however, is the importance of connecting people with activities and communities through what they call ‘social prescribing ‘. This is helping to tackle loneliness and isolation and improve wellbeing, a benefit that will sound very familiar to anyone involved in a good car or bike club like ours.
A historic vehicle gives us a reason to leave the house and somewhere to go. The club provides an instant conversation. Nobody struggles for an opening line when there is a car in front of them with a story to tell.
A question about a restoration, an unusual colour or a memorable road trip quickly becomes a conversation about families, careers and life. For someone who has spent much of the week alone, that first exchange can mean far more than any of us realise.
The volunteer marshalling vehicles onto a showfield has a purpose and knows they are needed. The experienced member sharing decades of technical knowledge discovers that expertise still has enormous value. A younger enthusiast asking questions may form a friendship with someone several generations older. Complete strangers become familiar faces, and familiar faces become lifelong friends.
There is value in having a date in the diary. There is value in preparing a car or bike, planning a route and knowing that people are looking forward to seeing you. Sometimes the vehicle is simply the key that opens the door.
This is why we should never judge the strength of our movement solely by auction prices, attendance figures or the number of vehicles lined up across a showfield. Its real strength lies in the friendships, shared experiences and sense of belonging that grow around them.
